The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) is a government scheme launched by the Prime minister of India to provide affordable housing to the urban poor. PMAY-U was launched in the year 2015 to provide a home to every urban resident with basic amenities by 2022. The scheme is designed to address the challenge of urban housing shortages and promote the development of sustainable and inclusive cities.
Both the Union and State governments are supposed to pay for PMAY-U as it is a sponsored scheme. The main objective of this scheme is to rehabilitate the slum dwellers with private developer participants, promoting affordable houses for weaker sections through Credit Linked Subsidy Schemes (CLSS); affordable housing in partnership with public and private sectors; and subsidy for Beneficiary-led Construction (BLC).
